We’re Going Where?

Matt started thinking about where he wanted to go on our trip about three years ago. It was his job to do the trip planning and before he knew it, the time had come to decide on an itinerary. Over months he considered Australia, Europe, and South America – he researched and studied all of them on google earth and zoomed in on street view. There were starts and stops, checking and re-checking, but he always kept coming back to Europe. Matt loves history and geography, and wanted to cover a lot of territory. Europe seemed like a good choice. First he thought about Northern Europe – maybe Finland, Sweden and Denmark. Then he moved farther south – how about France, Austria, Germany and Switzerland. Are we taking trains or can we drive? Driving sounded good to him. The possibilities were endless and it was up to him to decide.

In February I agreed to drive versus taking trains. It would give us more freedom to go where we wanted to go and how fast we wanted to move around. He wanted to see as much as possible and this seemed like the best option for that. Limiting the area we covered was difficult even though he knew there would always be future trips to see things we missed and return to favorite places. And so after hours of thinking and planning, this is the itinerary he came up with.

We’ll start in San Francisco and fly to London. We’ll stay in London for two days and then take the Chunnel to Paris and stay for another two days. From there we go by TGV to Dijon and pick up a car. I didn’t want to pick up a rental car in Paris and face all of the city traffic. Dijon sounded alike a good place since it”s a short distance outside of Paris and we would be headed toward the French Alps. Then we’re off to Annecy in the Alps and on to Switzerland, Austria and Germany. More details will unfold, but for now this is a general idea of where we’ll be in Europe.
